COLLEGE GENERAL RULES

Admission to the College is at the sole discretion of the Warden.

Any boy whose work or conduct is found to be unsatisfactory or by his actions in or outside the school, during term or vacation, brings the school into disrepute, may be discontinued at the discretion of the Warden.

No student will be allowed to remain in College after he has reached the age of twenty (20) years. If any boy reaches this age during the course of any year, he may be allowed to stay on in the College till the end of that year at the discretion of the Warden.

Every boy must be punctual at Roll Call. Those who come in late without adequate reason, are liable to be punished.

School days are normally Mondays to Fridays. If School is to be held on a Saturday for any reason, parents will be given adequate notice.

If a boy is absent from school for more than two (2) days due to illness, he must produce a Medical Certificate on his return to school. If a boy requires to be absent from school for any reason other than illness, permission for such absence should be sought and obtained in advance. Medical appointments and family functions should be as far possible be arranged for outside school hours. A day boy who is taken ill while at school can get medical attention from the College Sick Room.

Leave of absence during term time will not be given for long periods and in any case will not be allowed for more than one (1) month except in the case of illness. Any boy who overstays his leave or is absent from school without adequate explanation, is liable to have his name taken off the roll.

Any boy who is absent from school will not be permitted to represent the College or his House in any activity, except with the prior permission of the Warden.

No boy will be permitted to leave the school premises during school hours unless permission has been sought and obtained in writing from the Warden or Sub-Warden. Where such leave is not on behalf of some school activity, permission should be requested in person by the parents or guardians.

Boys may be placed ‘On Report’ or given ‘Detention’ for bad work, bad conduct or bad attendance. The purpose of placing a boy ‘On Report’ is to try to correct a boy who is slacking in his work or misbehaving and to keep the parents informed of the progress. Boys may be detained after school or on Saturdays at the discretion of the Warden, Sub- Warden or Head Masters.

Private Tution

Parents are free to engage any private tutor they please, but they are advised not to arrange for private tuition for their children without consulting the Warden as to whether such tuition is necessary. If parents wish to have the services of a member of the staff for private tuition, the Warden’ written permission must be obtained and this permission must be renewed at the beginning of each term. If private tuition is obtained from a member of the College Staff, fees should be paid direct tot eh teacher who undertakes the work and should not be included in any remittances to the College. Parents are reminded that the business of the school must always have precedence over such tuition

No teacher may give private tuition to any student who is a member of his or her class.

Every boy is given lessons to prepare at home and parents are urged to see that their children spend some time on their homework. In the Lower School, such work should occupy at least 1 hour, while in the Middle School it should occupy at least 1 –    1 ½  hours and in the Upper School 2 hours or more.

Every boy in the school is expected to keep

A Home Work book wherein letters of excuse and the home work that he has been given is entered.

Files of all the written work he has does.

Special Classes may be organized by teachers with the permission of the Warden.

The following places are out of bounds to all students of the College.

All tourist and guest houses and the railway lines at all times.

All shops, boutiques, eating houses and video game parlours during working hours.

The boarding house to all boys during school hours and to day boys at all times

The Library and Hall to all boys during School hours, except to those forms which have classes there as indicated in the time table, and to those boys who have obtained the written permission of the Warden or Sub Warden.

The Chapel Garden

Tuck-Shop during class hours.

No boy should walk on the lawns of the Quadrangles or the lawns in front of Main classroom Block, Boarding House or the Centenary Block.

Boys travelling to and from school by any method of transport, private and public, are expected to maintain the highest standards of behaviour, and not to cause any annoyance to members of the public. Walking along the railway lines is expressly forbidden.

No purchase of any kind should be made from hawkers or street vendors by any boy of the school.

No boy, while in College, will be permitted to join outside clubs or association, or to represent any club or association in any game or other activity without the prior permission of the Warden.

Leaving Certificate

Before School Leaving Certificates can be issues, a special ‘A.C.’ form needs to be filled up by the student and countersigned by the Bursar and by the masters in Charge of the various activities that the boy has taken part in while at College. Thus it is not possible for School Leaving certificates to be issued during the holidays, unless the boys have already obtained this form, filled it, got it countersigned and filed in the office. Boys leaving school are advised to have this form perfected and filed in the College Office. No School Leaving Certificate will be issued unless these requirements are fulfilled.

The rules set out in Paragraph (a) should be applicable in respect of the issue of certificates other than the school leaving certificates, such as certificates to be submitted at interviews etc.

Other Rules

It is forbidden for boys who are on roll of the College to enter the school premises in any uniform other than the College Uniform which is:

Lower & Middle School : Blue Shorts, White Shirt and Shoes. Shoes must be worn only with socks or stockings.

Upper School : White longs, white shirt and shoes. Boys of the Lower VI th may continue to wear the middle school uniform. Shoes must be worn with socks. Slippers must not be worn to school.

Parents who wish to interview the school authorities regarding school activities should meet the respective Sectional Head, then the Headmaster and finally the Warden.

Students will not be permitted to wear very short or long hair. Haircuts  must be taken in a decent manner, acceptable by the standards of the College. Students should always be clean shaven.

Students should not wear chains or medallions except for religious purpose. If worn they should be preferably made of inexpensive metal and worn unseen. Friendship bands and the like are forbidden to be worn to school and only a maximum of two strands of thread may be worn for religious purpose only.

All College Prefects should mark their attendance in class before the end of the first period.

The following items are forbidden to be brought to school.

Toys of any kind

Video games &  Video Cassettes

Cellular Phones

Compact Discs & Floppy Diskettes

Audio tapes

Magazines/Literature of an unacceptable nature.

Leave to travel abroad must be obtained from the Warden in writing at least two weeks prior to the date of departure.

All students who will be leaving the College are expected to obtain and complete an O.B.A. application form at the time of handing their A.C. Forms. These forms will be available with Registrar of the College.

Visits by parents, guardians, friends of students are not permitted during school hours. If for any urgent reason, a student has to be contacted during school hours, he should be contacted through the Warden, Sub-Warden or Headmaster. Such visits are restricted to parents and legal guardians only. Access to the school will be permitted through de Saram Road gate near the swimming pool on producing the N.I.C/Driving license to the security.

Parents should refrain from interviewing teachers at their homes. Parents who wish to meet teachers officially should do so on Parents’ Day or any other convenient school day after prior appointment through the Head Master.

In all correspondence with the Warden regarding any boy in the College, it is desirable that a parent or guardian should state the full name of the boy, his Form and in the case of a Boarder, the name of his dormitory/house. Correspondence with any member of the staff who is not teaching the student or who is not his House Master is prohibited.

Health certificates are sent to all boys with their reports. On their return to College after vacations, Day boys should hand these reports in to their Form Masters, while Boarders should hand in to their Hose Masters.

Information regarding a boy’s Extra Curricular activities has to be included in his report. Thus all boys should collect reports on their activities from the House Masters or Master in Charge of a particular activity and hand it to their form Masters as least two weeks before the end of each term.

Parents and boys are expected to exercise common sense in ensuring that the above rules are followed. The Wardens decision in interpreting the rules is final.

No boarder may enter the Boarding house during School Hours. No boarder may have private tuition in a House Masters or Resident masters room, such private tuition if sanctioned may be conducted in the classrooms in the Main Block,

A boarding house may only be entered by a member of the Dormitory. Boys of other houses or parents or visitors may NOT enter a dormitory, unless permission is obtained by the Sub Warden or House Master, on of whom must be present during such a visit. Parents or Guardians of boys in Winchester may NOT enter the Dormitory unless the Matron is present and has given her approval.

Visiting hours for Parent & Guardians are as follows:-

Week Days                7.30am - 3.30pm

Wednesdays              7.30am - 1.30pm

Visitors other than Parents or Guardians will be permitted to visit boarders only with the written permission of the Parents Visitors are not allowed to stay with any Resident Master or House Master or in a Prefects Cubicle.

Dormitories are out of bounds to all boarders during school hours and to day boys at all times. A boarder who is absent from school on account of illness must be in the sick room and not in the dormitory.

Every boys should be in his place for Preparation, Meals and Chapel Roll Call within five minutes of the bell.

All Christian boys in the boarding house must attend religious worship in the Chapel at the specific time, unless he is in the sick room. Dress: White Shirt and Trousers with College Tie.

Leave: Parents of boarders are requested to please take note of the following rules regarding ‘Exeat’ and ‘Leave’ for boarders:

    Exeat for Boarders in the main Dormitory will be granted once a month and for those at Winchester once a fortnight beginning from the third weekend after the beginning of the Term.

    Exeat will be granted only on the written application of the parent who should write directly to the House Master sending in the application to reach him at least 3 days before the weekend. Boarders who are granted exeat must return by 5.00 p.m. on Sunday.

    Parents of Boarders must ensure that their sons return to the Boarding by the specific time & date. If for any reason the boarder is unable to return on time, the School should be informed immediately. On return the boys must carry a letter of explanation from his parents and an M.C. where necessary.

    Boarders of the UVIth and above will be allowed 5 hours leave every fortnight on Saturdays.

    Duration of 5 hours leave will be as follows: 9.00 a.m to 12.00 p.m or 1.00 p.m.  to 6.oo p.m.

    Boarders who represent School in any activity should furnish a list to the Warden signed by the Master in charge of the particular activity, before they leave the premises. The procedure outlined above should then be followed.

    Exeat Cards should be signed by the House Master and the Sub Warden before a boy goes on exeat. On his return the boy should report to the Duty Master and his House Master with the exeat card duly signed by the person visited.

    All leave should be approved by the Sub Warden.

    School Prefects should have their exeat forms signed by the House Master but the Sub Warden should be informed.

Room Time: Room time on Saturday, Sundays and other holidays is intended to be a quiet time when boys may read or write letters or work. Boys should be in their Houses and may move and talk to one another but there should be no noise

Radios should not be used in the Dormitories during Room Time. When they are used at other times they should be used softly so as not to disturb those who are not listening. All radio sets should be licensed for the current year.

School Prefects should be at their work at Prep Time in their cubicles in the Prefects Room.

Every Boarder is expected to take part in games from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on every day of the week except Sundays & Full Moon Poya days. This applies to all boarders in the small club. Those who are members of the Big Club should play at least on of the two games played every team. Should a Boarder be requested to stay on for the games after 6:00 p.m. written consent must be obtained from the House Master, Master in Charge or Coach of the games concerned.

No games should be allowed around and against the walls of the buildings.

On days when there is any form of entertainment, dinner will be at 6:45 p.m. and Compline at 7:15 p.m.

No organised Games or Sports Activities should be held on Sundays or Full Moon Poya Days.

Ragging of any nature is strictly forbidden.
