S.THOMAS' COLLEGE v St. JOESPHS COLLEGE
S. Thomas' College Mt. Lavinia took major honours
in the inter school
Cricket match against St. Josephs' College Colombo
as the match ended in a tame draw.
For the Thomians it was our
opener Asiri Wickramanayake who stood out scoring
a well compiled 119. After going through a bad
patch in the early season, Asiri has rediscovered
his form once again and has been among the runs in
the last 3 outings. It was his first century for
the season as the team
went on a run spree by scoring 318 for 6 declared.
The massive partnership of over 150 runs between
Asiri and fresher Sanesh put the
team well on course to
overhaul the Joes first innings total of 232 all
out. Freshers Sanesh de Mel and Thilaksha
Sumanasiri also scored half centuries to swell the
total.
Resuming from our
overnight score of 95 for 1, we
grounded our way to a
formidable score in excess of 300 before declaring
for the loss of 6 wickets . For the Joes,
Supeshela Jayathilake had the best figures of 3
for 107.
In their second essay the Joes fared much better
as they scored 135 for 2 with Dilan Fernandopulle
scoring an unbeaten half century. Although
we comfortably won on
the first innings, Joes by virtue of the match
ending in a draw retained the Gilmour Jayasuriya
challenge trophy for another year. The Joes last
won the match outright in 2009 while it has been a
spate of draws in the last 3 years.
