RUGBY 2010 | S.THOMAS' COLLEGE v ROYAL COLLEGE

Last week and last match of the league and it becomes a disappointing week for the Thomians as the boys from Mount Lavinia were defeated by traditional rivals Royal College at the annual Royal Thomian Rugby match played on the 19th of June 2010 at the Royal Complex.

Expectations were high with the Thomian team and large crowds were seen at the venue in favour of both teams. Refree Dilroy Fernando blew the whistle to kick start the game with one part of the crowds cheering "Go Thora Go" and another part cheering "Go Royal Go".

The Royalists missed two oppotunities of scoring early in the game as the two Penalty kicks by Jamaldeen were off target.

The Thomians were the first to score points in the game. Rugby at its best it can be called as Suddharshana Muthutantri broke off the defence and went through the Royal defence and when about to be tackled passed the ball to Shaveen Kapuwatte who then passed it on to Vivian Rudra who touched down to bring in the first points for STC. But the conversion was not so successful and thus STC were leading 5-0.

It was then the Royalists who kept on scoring till half time was called. Royal vice-captain Shehan Pathirana was the first to touch down for the Royalists which was then converted successfully by Jamaldeen to give the Royalists the lead with the scoreboard reading 5-7. Royal winger Dilshan Paliyakkara scored two more tries for royal in quick succession to increase the lead for the home team. Both the conversions were missed and the Royalists were leading 17-5 after which Half Time was called by the Referee.

Few minutes after the second half began, Shehan Pathirana of Royal College scored once again for the Home team which was then successfully converted and thus Royal increased their lead with the scoreboard reading 24-5.

Hirushan Jayatilake raised the hopes of STC with a try he scored a few minutes later which was then successfully converted by Devin Jayasinghe and the scoreboard read 12-24 in favour of the Royalists.

Royal Full Back player Chamara Dabare was awarded a penalty try by refree Dilroy Fernando who scored the points for his team and then was again converted successfully after which the scoreboad read 31-12 in favour of the Royalists. Chamara Dabare scored once again with another try and Jamaldeen was successful with the conversion and so the Royalists were able to increase their lead to 38-12. The 38 point mark is also the highest score ever taken in a Royal Thomian match and the record was equaled again.

The Thomians tried hard to regain their lost pride but the Royalists defence was unbreakable thanks to a wonderfully executed game plan by the Royalists.

At 6.20pm, refree Dilroy Fernando's whistle was blown to mark the end of play and thus confirming Royal's victory in the match. Royal College also retained the Michael Gunaratna Trophy for which the match is played for.

The junior Under 18 game was also won by the Royalists 20-0 earlier in the day.

With the defeat in this match, the Thomians are now pushed down to 5th place in the league table and will remain 5th as this was the last match of the league.

The Thomians are to play St.Josephs College in the coming weeks (date not confimed yet) in a non-league match and few other tournaments too. Do check with the College site in the coming week for the fixtures of these matches which will also be convered live by the College Site.
