RUGBY 2010 | S.THOMAS' COLLEGE v St.PETERS COLLEGE
Enter the 7th week of the season and here we have the top two schools in the league table playing each other. The "Match of the Season" as it may be called, played between STC and St.Peters College was worked off on the 5th of June 2010 at the STC Grounds.
Both teams went into the match being the favourites to win as both teams were the top two teams in the league. STC had won 5 of their 6 matches played while the Peterite's were unbeaten winning all the 6 matches played. Large crowds were seen at the grounds to witness the match as supporters from both teams descended to the grounds.
It was STC who started giving work to the scorer in the very first minute of play as they put the first points of the game with a penalty kick to give the Thomians the early lead. While the Peterite's were still searching for scoring opportunities, the Thomians scored yet again with a Try by prop played Dinuk Amerasinghe which was then successfully converted into a goal by Devin Jayasinghe who has been successful throughout the season with the kicks and thus increasing the Thomian lead to 10-nil.
It was then time for the Peterite's to score as they opened their scorecard also with a penalty kick. Minutes later, the Peterites scored yet again with a try by Lakith Perera but Dulaj Perera was unsuccessful with converting it into a goal. The Thomians were still in the lead at this point at 10-8 when the Peterite winger Sandun Herath scored yet again with a try which was not converted into a goal yet again due to an unsuccessful kick. Minutes before halftime was called, the Peterites scored yet again with a successful penalty kick which gave the peterites a lead of 16-10 at Half Time.
The second half of the game was more tensed than the first with more points being scored by both teams. The Thomians were successful to score points every few minutes while also defending the attempts of the Peterites to score. Center player Anuruddha Willewera scored a few minutes after the game resumed from half time with a try and then again flanker Suddharshana Muttutantri scored for STC with a a try. Both the tries were successfully converted into goals by Devin Jayasinghe. Wellewera scored once again with a try a few minutes later completing a successful break of the Peterite defense by skipper Rajindra Gunasekara which was also successfully converted. Thomians were still in the lead at this point with 31-16.
The Peterites then went into the game to make a comeback which was partly successful. Skipper Keith Gurusinghe, winger Sandun Herath and fly half Dulaj Perera all made contribution in the form of tries but the converting was unsuccessful at all times. The last try by the Peterite's was made in the last few seconds of the game when referee Dilroy Fernando blew the whistle to end the game in a draw.
Thus the "Match of the Season" was drawn while STC, the winners of the last years game retained the Archibald Perera Trophy for the third year in succession. No change of position for these two teams in the points table, but a match this has been worth the money paid for the ticket.
The Thomians are to play yet another strong team in this season, Kingswood College next weekend on the 12th of June at the STC grounds.
