RUGBY 2010 | S.THOMAS' COLLEGE v TRINITY COLLEGE

After being beaten by Isipathana College in a close encounter last week and recording their first loss in the season, STC bounced back with a brilliant performance to win the match against Trinity College Kandy in their first match away from home at the Pallekale Ground in Kandy on the 15th of May 2010.

Both teams came into the game with 2 wins and 1 loss against their name in the points table and was a must win game. Playing on their home ground, Trinity College had the home ground advantage and hence they too were the first to start scoring in the match. It was a match that was filled with tension as the lead passed from one team to the other every few minutes untill the last few minutes where STC dominated the proceedings.

The Trinitians opened the points table with a penalty. And within minutes, the Thomians replied with a try by center Anuruddha Willewera who broke through the defence of Trinity to open the score cards for STC and thus put STC on the lead 5-3.

Trinity College yet again regained the lead with a try which was successfully converted into a goal and a penalty and gave the home team a lead of 13-5. But the Thomians were quick enough to regain the lead with a penalty and then few minutes later, a try yet again by center Anuruddha Willewera which brought the score to 15-13 in favour of STC. Center player Shaveen Kapuwatte they broke through the Trinity defence to score points with a try that brought the lead for STC 20-13 and shortly afterwards half time was called.

After play resumed for the second half, the Thomian lead was increased again with a penalty and the scores read 23-13. From that point onwards, it was Trinity who dominated the game for the next few minutes. Trinity went on to score 12 more points with two tries of which one was successfully converted and thus regained the lead in the match 25-23.

Thomians never let the game away, and scored yet again through a try by center played Anuruddha Willewera which was successfully converted and STC was back in the lead 30-25. 3 more points were added few minutes later with a penalty and the lead for STC rose with the score board reading 33-25. Trinity then scored their last few points of the game with a try which updated the scoreboard to 33-30 with STC still having a lead.

The golden moment of the game was seen when center player Anuruddha Willewera was passed on the ball at the STC goal line and went dashing through the whole field evading a tackles from the opposition players and scored for STC with a try (also his 4th try in this match) which was then successfully converted to increase the Thomian lead to 40-30. The lead was converted to a win when the referee blew the whistle to signal the end of play.

It was all smiles in the Thomian bench and among the few supporters present in the grounds. The Thomians apart from winning the match to increase their points in the league table, also retained the prestigious Cannon R.S.De Saram Trophy.

The junior games that were worked off before the match started were all won by Trinity College.

STC will play the tailenders of the table Prince of Wales College on the 22nd of May 2010. The venue of this match is yet to be announced and will be held either in the STC Grounds or the CR & FC grounds. Match will start at 4.30pm.
